New from Midstates - Boxing Twilight (Mental Monkey, Feb. 21)
Nobody's writing about Midstates yet, so seeing that they're from Illinois and almost fit into the Song:Illinois mold I'll take a stab. Their new record is coming out soon on a Sony imprint. I've been sent it to review so I am assuming I won't go down in flames for linking to a track or two.
The songs on Boxing Twilight (Mental Monkey, Feb. 21) are basically pop but they've been deconstructed and put back together in the band's home studio with plenty of effects, digital processing and found sounds. But at the end of the day it's the few snippets of vocals that can be made out through the noise that make it all worth while, especially in the songs "Even Though" and "Under There". Their 2003 debut made a year end list of some kind or another by the Sun Times' music critic Jim Dereogotis and while that's enough to turn me against a band in this instance he's not far off.
I can't find a place to pre-order this one yet so contact the band (downhyperspace@yahoo.com) if you must have it (and you must!).
WWW.DREAMGEO.COM - Midstates "Boxing Twilight" (Mental Monkey) Hyperactive pop munchkins making big poppy ropes and cables out their guitars, drums, and flanks of sparkling electronics. Basically chunky pop music in a blender with some really nice melodies and song structures in the mix. They are a little too busy for their own good; and are at their best when they give a single idea a couple moments to develop without layering on the manic ADD distractions. - George Parsons, Dream Magazine #6, www.dreamgeo.com
